U.S. Financial Diaries

How does the typical American family manage their day-to-day finances? The U.S. Financial Diaries tracked the budgets of 235 low- and moderate-income households for a full year, painting a never-before-seen picture of the financial instability that many households face.

Unstable Incomes, Uncertain Futures

By observing household finances over long periods of time, the U.S. Financial Diaries uncovered shocking levels of income and expense volatility – pushing many so-called middle-class households below the poverty line for several months during the year. The study also highlighted the strategies families used to cope with this uncertainty, such as seeking additional work and leaning on friends or family for support.

5 months

during the year when income was 25% above or below average for the typical household

41%

of households owed money to friends or family at some time during the study

53%

of households supplement their employment income with earnings from casual jobs or self-employment
